Being a fan of both Deadliest Warrior and the blogging community surrounding it, I've decided to re-examine some of the battles featured on the show, that while having undeniably awesome matchups may have strayed from actual history a bit to put it lightly. A couple other bloggers have tried to tackle this project, most notably Mike's excellent redos of the first two episodes, but I've decided to try and get in it for the long haul. So, without further ado the first match...
THE APACHE WARRIOR
Masters of guerrilla warfare, who struck fear into the hearts of the more modern Mexican and American armies for years
VS
THE ROMAN GLADIATOR
Professional fighters of Ancient Rome, whose lives revolved around battle and victory.
This has always been one of my favorite matchups ever on Deadliest Warrior, as it was one of those rare occasions where the warriors were both very different and very evenly matched. It had fewer historical inaccuracies than most, and the Apache experts were some of the best the show ever had. That being said, the weapon choice, especially on the gladiator side, did have some flaws, and armor and intangibles were not taken into account.
To remain as impartial as possible, I'll be using a scoring system similar to that used by a lot
of DW bloggers. The weapons, armor, and other qualities of these warriors will be split up into categories, and each category will be scored individually depending on its effectiveness.
Weapons
Long range: 20 points
Mid range: 15 points
Short range: 15 points
Special weapons: 10 points
Armor
Head: 10 points
Body: 20 points
Arms: 5 points
Legs: 5 points
Shields: 15 points
Parrying: 5 points
Intangibles (or X-Factors for you season 3 lovers)
Tactics: 20 points
Teamwork/Cohesion: 10 points (this battle will be fought between two squads of 5, which I think better represents the warriors in question)
Morale: 15 points
Training: 15 points
Experience: 15 points
Physical traits: 5 points
Mobility: 10 points
This scoring system is in no way set in stone, and if you have any suggestions to improve it, let me know by all means. That's all for now, and hopefully part of the Apache bio will be up soon.
